It has obviously been ages since I've written a journal... Definitely more than a month. But I do find writing these periodically instead of more regularly allows me to see how much I've actually accomplished since then, or how much I've grown.
I've just recently uploaded photos from the very first two rolls of film from my Bessa and I must say I'm quite happy with how they turned out. My dad got the film developed, and over the phone when I asked how it was, he got pretty serious going "we'll discuss it when I get home". DISCUSS I tell you, discuss. That kind of peeved me a little bit, but my mum told me it's alright, at least he was taking teaching me to use a rangefinder seriously. "You've got the eye, he's got the technological know-how, just put them both together, in a couple of months you'll be great." She's right, I guess.
And I used to think I could take pictures of everything and anything, or that I was THAT good, and yes it's true I could whip out a camera and take photos of whatever, whenever, but are they good? No, not always. My macro shots of objects are absolutely dismal, and I rarely put myself in the situation in which I have to take pictures of people. I'm definitely much better, and much more comfortable, shooting landscapes or doing street photography.
Which brings me to a project I must find time to do. A challenge, more like. 1-2 rolls of film, or 36x2 shots, dedicated solely to people. Definitely of my favourite people, and the people I see most to start with, definitely doing what they love, or what I love them for, or whatever I remember them most clearly for. I'm not quite sure what camera I'll be using for this, because close-up shots are very awkward to do on rangefinders, the Hasselblad is much too complicated and I don't want to have to lug it around, Polaroid film is ridiculously expensive (8 shots for S$30!), and a DSLR is just boring. However, come to think of it, I don't mind having to use the Polaroid, the effect would be great... But where on Earth am I going to find $140+ just to fund a project of my whimsical fancy?! Of course, the next best cheapest option to achieving the same Polaroid effect with much better quality would be to use the Hasselblad polaroid attachment, but then I'd still have to lug that bloody thing around.
Oh well. All in the name of art!
